Who Can an Arizona Mesothelioma Lawyer Help?

An Arizona lawyer for mesothelioma can help anyone who was exposed to asbestos and was later diagnosed with a serious illness like this rare cancer.

To build a strong case, your attorney must establish a connection between your diagnosis and asbestos exposure, supported by evidence including employment history, witness testimony, and other records.

Our Arizona mesothelioma lawyers can help:

  • Patients with illnesses like mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis
  • Family members, including spouses and children of the person diagnosed
  • Representatives of the mesothelioma victim’s estate in the case of wrongful death

"Our primary role in the very beginning stages of a mesothelioma lawsuit is to be detectives. We have to find products that were around the victim during the time of their exposure to asbestos."
– Jim Sokolove, Founder (Retired 2013)

Even if you don’t remember how or when you were exposed to asbestos, our Arizona mesothelioma attorneys may still be able to help. We have the resources to prove asbestos exposure and pinpoint the companies responsible for your illness.

Arizona Mesothelioma Statute of Limitations

Every state has laws called statutes of limitations that set strict deadlines for filing a mesothelioma personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit.

The Arizona mesothelioma statute of limitations is generally 2 years from the patient's diagnosis or the date of their passing, according to A.R.S. § 12-542.

Once time runs out, you may lose your right to file an asbestos lawsuit and pursue compensation. Don’t wait and leave money sitting on the table.

Call (800) 647-3434 right now for help determining your eligibility to file an Arizona mesothelioma lawsuit. It costs nothing to speak with us.

What to Expect When Filing an Arizona Mesothelioma Lawsuit

When families decide to pursue a mesothelioma lawsuit, they’ll typically follow a series of structured steps aimed at identifying asbestos exposure, building evidence, and seeking compensation from the responsible companies.

Most mesothelioma cases are resolved through settlements, meaning many clients never need to appear in court to recover compensation.

Filing an Arizona mesothelioma lawsuit generally involves:

  • Contacting an experienced asbestos attorney
  • Gathering evidence to prove exposure
  • Filing the claim in the best court for your case
  • Negotiating a settlement that provides full compensation
  • Fighting for you in court if necessary

Many of our mesothelioma clients start receiving payouts in as few as 90 days, with additional settlement checks arriving over the next 12-18 months or so. This often allows families to cover immediate expenses while also securing their financial future as compensation continues to come in from other companies.

When you work with Sokolove Law, our mesothelioma attorneys can handle every step of the legal process on your behalf. Find out more about how filing an Arizona mesothelioma lawsuit works.

1. Find the Best Mesothelioma Lawyer Near You

At Sokolove Law, our Arizona mesothelioma attorneys offer free consultations to help determine whether you may be eligible to file a legal claim.

During this conversation, we’ll learn more about your work and life history to help identify potential sources of asbestos exposure.

If you have a case, we can travel to meet you wherever and wherever is most convenient, at no cost to you.

Our team understands how difficult a mesothelioma diagnosis can be and how quickly medical bills can pile up. That’s why we work to get started on your case as quickly as possible — often within 24 hours of your initial call.

“Sokolove Law was quick after we contacted them. They sent someone out immediately, and the person came to our home and talked to us.”
– Alicia, Wife of a Mesothelioma Client

2. We’ll Gather Evidence to Build Your Case

Asbestos exposure can occur decades before a mesothelioma diagnosis, sometimes 20-50 years prior. This can make identifying the manufacturer of the asbestos-containing products you were exposed to difficult.

That’s where experience matters. For decades, Sokolove Law has worked on mesothelioma cases and compiled a warehouse of evidence on:

Arizona's copper mining and smelting industry, concentrated in towns like Morenci, Hayden, Globe, and Douglas, is one of the state's most significant sources of asbestos exposure. Our team has deep knowledge of these local worksites and their asbestos use.

Using this knowledge and our internal databases, we’ll work to trace your exposure history and identify the companies that may be liable, allowing us to build a strong case on your behalf.

3. File Arizona Mesothelioma Claims

With the help of an experienced legal team, filing a mesothelioma claim in Arizona can be handled efficiently and in accordance with all legal deadlines and filing requirements.

Arizona has specific filing requirements, including a law requiring plaintiffs to submit a detailed sworn statement within 45 days of filing, making it important to work with attorneys who know the state's rules.

Depending on your situation, you may be eligible to pursue compensation from multiple sources, including asbestos lawsuits against manufacturers, asbestos trust fund claims established by bankrupt companies, and certain VA benefits.

When you work with Sokolove Law, we will pursue compensation through all of the avenues available to you in order to maximize the amount of money you may receive.

4. Negotiate Mesothelioma Settlements

Your Arizona asbestos attorney will work to negotiate a mesothelioma settlement with the asbestos-related companies on your behalf. The average settlement for this cancer is more than $1 Million.

Asbestos cases involve 75 defendants on average, according to KCIC. You may qualify for compensation from each one.

The majority of mesothelioma cases end in settlements, providing families with quicker access to much-needed financial support.

"Our clients could receive compensation in as few as 6 weeks. The more likelihood is 2 or 3 months, and then you'll probably continue receiving various compensation for another year."
– Ricky LeBlanc, Managing Attorney of Sokolove Law

5. Arizona Mesothelioma Trial Attorneys Fight for You

If a company doesn’t settle, the case may continue to court, where both sides will present their arguments before a judge and jury.

The jury will then deliver a verdict on whether the company’s asbestos-containing products played a role in your illness and determine the amount of compensation to be awarded.

In one case, a jury awarded $17 Million to the family of a civilian U.S. Navy employee who passed away from mesothelioma. The Arizona mesothelioma verdict included $9 Million in compensatory damages and $8 Million in punitive damages meant to punish the defendant.

Our Arizona mesothelioma trial attorneys are committed to preparing strong, evidence-backed cases that are designed to stand up in court and help families secure the compensation they deserve.

Our Mesothelioma Attorneys in Arizona Maximize Your Payouts

Mesothelioma attorneys in Arizona maximize payouts by thoroughly investigating all potential sources of asbestos exposure, identifying every company that may have played a role in your illness, and pursuing compensation from each one.

Depending on your exposure history, you may be entitled to compensation from multiple sources, including:

Not every firm has the ability to seek compensation from all of these sources — but we can. At Sokolove Law, our team has helped over 9,300 asbestos exposure victims nationwide, securing more than $5.5 Billion total.

Arizona residents may have been exposed to asbestos at hospitals, copper mines, power plants, schools, and other locations where this mineral was used. Our Arizona attorneys for mesothelioma can help clients prove asbestos exposure and pursue compensation through every available avenue.

Filing Arizona Mesothelioma Lawsuits

Mesothelioma lawsuits award between $1 Million and $11.4 Million on average, depending on whether your case settles or goes to court.

If you’ve been diagnosed with mesothelioma, an Arizona asbestos lawsuit can help you pursue compensation from the companies responsible for your asbestos exposure, including manufacturers, suppliers, or distributors.

Pursuing Asbestos Trust Fund Payouts

Many asbestos-related companies filed for bankruptcy to avoid the lawsuits filed against them. As part of these proceedings, courts ordered them to create asbestos trust funds to pay current and future mesothelioma victims.

$30 Billion

Estimated Amount in Asbestos Trust Funds

There are at least 30 asbestos bankruptcy trusts linked to job sites in Arizona. Trusts established by Babcock & Wilcox and JT Thorpe are connected to nearly 40% of known asbestos job sites in the state.

Trust fund claims do not require a court appearance. In many cases, individuals may qualify for compensation from multiple trust funds, often without leaving their home.

Mesothelioma VA Benefits for Veterans

If you or your loved one developed mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure during military service, you may be eligible for VA benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Mesothelioma has a 100% disability rating, which may qualify veterans for over $3,930 a month in compensation and free health care.

Arizona has 3 VA medical centers in Phoenix, Tucson, and Prescott that offer cancer care and may be able to treat veterans with mesothelioma. Veterans in southern Arizona also benefit from the Tucson VA's close partnership with the University of Arizona Cancer Center, which is an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Our VA-accredited lawyers can help you prepare your claim, even if you have been denied VA benefits in the past. Filing a mesothelioma lawsuit won't impact your ability to file a VA claim.

Arizona Mesothelioma Lawsuit News 2026

Mesothelioma claims continue to move forward in Arizona as victims seek justice for asbestos exposure. Courts have held companies accountable for exposing workers, veterans, and consumers to dangerous asbestos fibers.

These cases have resulted in significant verdicts and settlements, helping families recover compensation for medical bills, lost income, and more. Staying informed about Arizona mesothelioma lawsuit news can help those affected better understand their legal rights.

Here are some of the latest Arizona mesothelioma lawsuit updates:

  • February 2026: A bill was introduced in the Arizona state legislature that would require businesses and contractors to pay fees for disturbing or removing asbestos during renovation and demolition projects. Senate Bill 1449 specified that the fees could only be used to fund the cost of inspecting, monitoring, and enforcing Arizona's asbestos safety rules.
  • September 2025: Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes issued cease-and-desist demands involving Tucson apartment complexes over alleged unsafe living conditions, including potential asbestos exposure concerns affecting tenants.
  • December 2024: A judge temporarily halted asbestos abatement and demolition work at several historic Tucson motels after preservation groups raised concerns about the handling of asbestos-containing materials during redevelopment activities.
  • June 2024: Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes announced a $700 Million settlement between 42 states and Johnson & Johnson over the safety of the company’s talc products, which have been linked to mesothelioma and ovarian cancer. Arizona was to receive $15 Million from the settlement.
  • April 2022: Arizona tightened the rules around asbestos lawsuits by enacting A.R.S. § 12-783, which requires anyone suing for asbestos-related injuries to submit a detailed sworn statement within 45 days of filing their case. The statement must name every company being sued, identify the specific products that caused the exposure, and list every job site where the exposure occurred.
  • April 2020: The City of Flagstaff received support through the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Brownfields Assistance Program to help revitalize the city’s historic downtown corridor, which included funding for asbestos abatement in older buildings.
  • May 2018: The Arizona Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling in Quiroz v. Alcoa Inc., claiming employers don’t inherently have a duty to protect family members of their workers from take-home asbestos exposure. The case involved Ernest Quiroz, who died from mesothelioma after his father worked at a Reynolds Metal plant for 35 years.
  • April 2016: A federal jury in Arizona awarded $17 Million to the family of a retired U.S. Navy shipyard machinist, who died from mesothelioma after asbestos exposure linked to industrial valve and gasket products.

These developments show that asbestos exposure remains a serious public health and legal issue across Arizona. From major Arizona mesothelioma verdicts to enforcement actions, courts and regulatory agencies continue to hold companies accountable.

$15 Million Arizona Asbestos Talc Settlement

In 2024, 42 states accused Johnson & Johnson of misleading consumers about the safety of their talc-based products by denying the presence of asbestos, a known carcinogen.

The company agreed to a $700 Million talcum powder settlement to resolve allegations brought by state attorneys general, with Arizona receiving over $15 Million.

“By stopping the manufacture and sale of these harmful products and imposing these penalties, we are protecting the health and well-being of countless individuals and ensuring accountability on behalf of consumers.”
– Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes

$17 Million Arizona Mesothelioma Verdict

An Arizona jury in Maricopa County awarded $17 Million to the family of 73-year-old George Coulbourn, who passed away from mesothelioma.

Arizona mesothelioma attorneys handle a wide range of cases involving asbestos exposure and related illnesses. Depending on your diagnosis and how you were exposed, different types of asbestos attorneys in Arizona may be able to pursue compensation and accountability on your behalf.

Our Arizona asbestos lawyers can help with cases involving mesothelioma, lung cancer, secondary asbestos exposure, talcum powder, and more.

Arizona Mesothelioma Lawyers

Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Our Arizona mesothelioma lawyers can investigate your work history and other potential exposure sources to identify the companies responsible.

In 2022, there were 57 new mesothelioma cases and 41 mesothelioma deaths throughout the state, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Our team can pursue compensation from multiple sources, including lawsuits, asbestos trust fund claims, and VA benefits to help cover medical expenses, lost income, and other costs.

Arizona Mesothelioma Wrongful Death Lawyers

If a patient passes away before filing a claim or before their case is resolved, their surviving family members or estate representative may still have the right to pursue compensation with the help of our Arizona mesothelioma wrongful death lawyers.

More than 5,100 Arizona residents have passed away from asbestos-related diseases, according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

Mesothelioma wrongful death claims can help families recover compensation for funeral expenses, medical bills, loss of income or companionship, and more.

Arizona Lung Cancer Lawyers

Asbestos exposure can also cause lung cancer, especially in workers exposed over long periods. Thousands of job sites across the state caused many workers to come in contact with toxic fibers.

In Arizona, there are an estimated 4,000-4,500 new lung cancer cases each year, according to the American Lung Association.

Our Arizona lung cancer lawyers help victims determine whether exposure contributed to their diagnosis and pursue compensation from those responsible.

Arizona Talcum Powder Lawyers

Many talcum powder products have been found to contain microscopic asbestos fibers, which can increase the risk of mesothelioma, ovarian cancer, and other serious illnesses.

In addition to its use in cosmetic and personal care products, talc was also used in industrial settings and has been documented at mine sites throughout the state — including the Morenci Mine in Greenlee County, according to Mindat.org®.

Our Arizona talcum powder lawyers can help individuals who used contaminated talc products file lawsuits against manufacturers that failed to warn consumers about asbestos risks.

Arizona Secondary Asbestos Exposure Lawyers

Secondary asbestos exposure can occur when workers unknowingly bring asbestos fibers home on their clothing or tools, exposing family members. Spouses or children later become sick, often without realizing how they were exposed in the first place.

Our Arizona secondary asbestos exposure lawyers can help spouses, children, and other family members pursue compensation if they developed mesothelioma or another asbestos-related illness secondhand.

Arizona Asbestos Exposure & Mesothelioma Statistics

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer caused by asbestos. It can occur after a single exposure or after decades of prolonged exposure. It’s not uncommon for it to take 20-50 years for the signs of asbestos-related illness to first appear.

In Arizona, thousands of job sites were known sources of asbestos exposure. Asbestos statistics in Arizona show that the cancer-causing mineral remains a serious public health threat across the state.

Arizona asbestos exposure and mesothelioma statistics include:

  • From 1999 to 2017, more than 5,100 asbestos-related deaths were recorded in Arizona, with 323 linked to asbestosis, 970 to mesothelioma, and 3,880 to lung cancer.
  • During this period, Maricopa County saw about 2,743 asbestos-related deaths, followed by Pima County with 990, Yavapai County with 333, Pinal County with 262, Yuma County with 189, and Mohave County with 182.
  • Arizona recorded 4.4 asbestos-related deaths per 100,000 residents, which is lower than the nationwide average of 4.9. Yavapai County had the state's highest asbestos-related death rate at 8.7, followed by Cochise County at 5.9, and Gila County at 5.7.
  • Arizona has at least 103 documented sites where asbestos naturally occurs in the ground, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Approximately 96 of these sites are found in Gila County and Pinal County.
  • Arizona is home to multiple military bases. For decades, asbestos was widely used across all branches of the U.S. military, putting those who lived or worked on these bases at risk of exposure.

Many Arizona residents were directly exposed to asbestos while working in industries like construction, shipbuilding, manufacturing, and public infrastructure, where asbestos-containing materials were widely used for decades.

Asbestos Exposure at the W.R. Grace Phoenix Plant

From 1964 to 1992, a vermiculite processing facility operated by W.R. Grace at 4220 W. Glenrosa Avenue in Phoenix handled ore that the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) later confirmed posed a public health hazard to workers.

The raw vermiculite shipped to the plant from Libby, Montana was estimated to contain up to 21-26% fibrous amphibole asbestos — meaning more than one-fifth of the material was a known carcinogen.

Air sampling inside the facility recorded asbestos concentrations as high as 13.96 fibers per cubic centimeter, which is nearly 140 times the legal limit. W.R. Grace's own internal records estimated that more than 1 in 4 long-term workers had contracted asbestosis.

Exposure wasn’t limited to plant workers. The ATSDR confirmed that family members of workers were also exposed to asbestos secondhand through fibers carried home on workers' hair and clothing.

Helping a Construction Worker with Mesothelioma in Arizona

When Oscar moved from Mexico to Arizona, he took a job as an underground construction worker. His role involved installing pipes beneath the city of Phoenix, some of which contained asbestos.

For more than 30 years, Oscar worked hard to provide for his loved ones. However, after developing a persistent cough, doctors determined he had pleural mesothelioma.

Wanting to make sure his family would be financially secure, Oscar turned to our Arizona mesothelioma lawyers for help. Although he passed away soon after, our team continued working on behalf of his family, providing support in their native language and securing meaningful results.

It was very important to me that my lawyer spoke Spanish, so that I could understand the laws involved,” said Oscar’s wife Guadalupe. “It was a very nice experience.”

Supporting a Loved One Through Mesothelioma Video Thumbnail
Video Summary: Guadalupe and Isabel discuss the loss of Oscar, a loving father and husband with mesothelioma.

So, fuimos juntos a comprar un anillo.

Even people who have not directly worked around asbestos can be diagnosed with mesothelioma. Often, this is due to secondhand exposure to asbestos.

What are common symptoms of mesothelioma in Arizona?

Mesothelioma symptoms often include a persistent cough and fatigue, which can easily be brushed off or attributed to more common illnesses in Arizona. As a result, it’s important to understand the early symptoms of this disease and talk with your doctor if you have a history of asbestos exposure.

Symptoms of mesothelioma may include:

  • A cough that won’t go away
  • Abdominal pain or bloating
  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Fluid buildup in the chest or abdomen
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Weakness

As this cancer progresses, symptoms may become more severe and substantially impact daily life. Signs of late-stage mesothelioma can include loss of appetite, delirium, and difficulty breathing.

What are the asbestos laws in Arizona?

Arizona has strict laws governing the handling, removal, and disposal of asbestos to protect workers and the public. However, there is no legislation regarding legacy asbestos, so the carcinogen may still exist in older buildings.

Find out about Arizona asbestos laws:

  • Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) – Asbestos NESHAP Program: Requires written notification to ADEQ at least 10 business days before any renovation or demolition project involving regulated asbestos-containing materials. Projects disturbing more than 160 square feet or 260 linear feet of regulated asbestos must comply with federal NESHAP standards.
  • A.R.S. § 12-782: Requires plaintiffs filing asbestos personal injury claims in Arizona to submit a sworn statement identifying all asbestos trust claims filed or anticipated, within 45 days of the defendant's answer.
  • A.R.S. § 12-783: Requires plaintiffs to file a sworn statement within 45 days of filing an asbestos action specifying the factual basis for each claim against each defendant, including the exposed person's work history, specific job sites, each asbestos-containing product they were exposed to, and the specific disease claimed. Courts must dismiss claims against any defendant not specifically identified in the statement.

Local boards of health may use their authority or bylaws to require correction of conditions that could affect public health or safety, including asbestos-related hazards.
