In September 2025, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee ruled in favor of a CEO who became unable to meet the high demands of his job, including long hours and travel, due to cardiac disease and other health problems.

Unum had approved the man's long-term disability claim in 2019 but then terminated benefits in March 2021 and repeatedly upheld the denial on appeal.

The federal court in Chattanooga determined that the main duties of an average CEO include long work days and frequent travel and ordered LTD benefits reinstated retroactive to March 2021.

Health Care Worker Entitled to Benefits

A Tennessee federal court ruled in favor of a chief clinical officer for a health care company who stopped working due to chronic neck and back issues and rheumatoid arthritis, causing pain and weakness.
